Safer Steps From Sloping Sidewalks (2 credit hours/2 HSW Hours)
This 2 hour course will present a new method to design safe stairways from sloping sidewalks as well as how to design minor modifications to the normal geometry of individual steps of existing offending stairways that interface with sloping surfaces. It will also show how to redesign the sidewalk itself so that an interfacing stairway will be safe from tripping hazards, and it will explain how pre-cast concrete steps can be modified to conform with the safe-step parameters that this new method employs.
Kenneth LiDonnici

*  Understand matters relating to stairway design in general

*  Become familiar with several of the codes covering exterior stairway design

*  Understand how stairways interfacing with sloping sidewalks engender safety problems

*  Understand how “riser” and “tread” dimensions should be measured and the mathematics to perform in the design of safer stairways which interface with sloping sidewalks

*  Insight into how simple Descriptive Geometry can be employed in the redesign of unsafe sidewalk-stairway interfaces.
