The Ford Pinto Exploding Gas Tank: A Case Study in Professional Ethics (2 credit hours)
This 2 hour webinar for architects and engineers discusses the ethical and professional dimensions of the case of the Ford Pinto -- with its notorious exploding gas tank. We will assess the decision-making that knowingly resulted in the loss of lives. We will examine the details of cost/benefit analysis and utilitarianism -- one of the most dominant ethical theories today. We will learn the case's basic facts, discuss ethical issues it raises, and propose what might be learned from it.
Robert Clewis

1.     Understand the detailed facts and events in the Ford Pinto case. Learning about the exploding gas tanks will raise awareness of the design and decisions that impacted public safety and welfare.

2.     Discuss the ethical issues raised by the Pinto case, specifically, public safety, professional responsibility, duty to the public. Show how the code of ethics for licensed engineers, architects, and professionals apply to these issues of safety.

3.     Constructively evaluate the actions of the engineers, designers, and business leaders, and other main actors in the case, to see how safety and welfare could have been protected better and what could have been differently.

4.     Interpret what we can learn from the Pinto case about the ethical decision making process, and discuss what is the best ethical theory to protect the public safety, health, and welfare.
