Mechanical Science Part 1 : Diesel Engine Fundamentals; Heat Exchangers; Pumps (8 credit hours)

This course focuses on basic operating principles of 2-cycle and 4-cycle diesel engines; the construction of plate heat exchangers and tube and shell heat exchangers; and, the operation of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps. Included in the course are descriptions of major diesel engine components, terminology, fundamentals of the diesel cycle, speed and fuel controls and protection. The heat exchanger section includes types of heat exchangers and construction, comparisons of heat exchangers and applications. The pump section includes principles of operation of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, pump operating characteristics, various classifications of pumps and protection.

The student will obtain knowledge of the basic construction, operation and performance of diesel engines, heat exchangers and pumps.

The student will obtain knowledge of the contribution and importance of various components that are included in diesel engines, heat exchangers and pumps designs.
 
The student will obtain knowledge which will aid in the selection and application of diesel engines, heat exchangers and pumps.
 
The student will obtain knowledge of protective devices included in the design or application.
