· The student will have knowledge of the principal by which generators convert mechanical energy to electrical energy, the basic construction of a generator and the mechanics of how the generator creates a voltage. This will include specific parts within the dc generator, such as the armature, slip rings and commutator, as well as types of generators; series-wound, shunt-wound, compound-wound.
· The student will have knowledge of the main differences and similarities of dc generators and dc motors, as well as, the advantages and disadvantages of different types of dc motors, namely series dc motors, shunt motors and compound motors.
· The student will have knowledge of the principle of magnetic induction as it applies to ac generators and the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of the two basic types of ac generators – rotating-armature alternators and rotating-field alternators.
· The student will have knowledge of ac motors – including series, synchronous, and induction motors. Further information will be given on the specific parts that make up the ac motor and similarities and differences within the parts and workings of each type of motor.
