Principles and Use of Ball and Roller Bearings (AIA - TCEBRB) (8 credit hours)
This 8 hour course is written in an easy to read step-by-step fashion starting with text and an appropriate number of explanatory drawings devoted to the basics Ball and Roller Bearings. These include purpose, description, operation, manufacture and types. A simple formula is used to calculate the expected life of each of a pair of bearings mounted in a simple setting. Other aspects such as installation, lubrication, and application follow with text and sketches. Finally, there are a number of drawings showing bearings in actual pieces of mechanical equipment with expert analysis explaining their usage.

It is the intention of this course to present to the student a broad, easy to read, background of the subject matter so that it is better understood and possibly further pursued. Following is a list of items that the student is expected to retain:

1) The ability to identify and name the various components that make up anti-friction bearings.

2) The ability to understand the relative motions that take place inside a bearing when it is rotating.

3) Have a basic idea of the important aspects of installation, lubrication, and application of bearings.

4) Have an understanding of how expected lie is calculated in a typical application.

5) Know the difference between ball and roller bearings and how they are used.
