Centrifugal Pumps: Basic Knowledge & Concepts (3 credit hours)
This 3 hour course will explain basic pump terms necessary to read and understand pump curves. This course will provide a working knowledge of several key pump terms such as Total Discharge Head, Specific Gravity, Velocity Head, Pump Efficiency and Brake Horsepower. The student will also learn how to convert a pumps’ discharge head to gauge pressure in psi.

This course is written to be a basic primer in Centrifugal Pumps. Basic pump terminology will be explained and examples of how each term is used will be given. Basic and important equations will be presented and examples of how to use them will be given. The following concepts will be covered:

  • Useful work from a pump
  • Water Horsepower
  • Brake Horsepower
  • How Specific Gravity effects pressure guage readings
