Mechanical Science Part II: Valves & Miscellaneous Mechanical Components (8 credit hours)
This 8 Hour course focuses on common valves including gate, globe, ball , plug, safety and others and miscellaneous mechanical devices including cooling towers, air compressors, demineralizers, filters and others commonly used in industrial and nuclear facilities. The valve section includes descriptions of many types of valves, their construction, operation, application and functions of the basic parts and valve actuators. The miscellaneous mechanical components section includes the purpose, construction and operation of various mechanical devices including air compressors, hydraulics, boilers, cooling towers, demineralizers, pressurizers and steam traps.

·         The student will obtain knowledge of the basic construction of valves including globe, gate, plug, ball, needle, butterfly, diaphragm, pinch, check, stop check, safety/relief and reducing valves

·         The student will obtain knowledge of the application and function of basic parts of the various valves.                          

·         The student will obtain knowledge of the operation of the various mechanical components covered including multiple types of components within a general category (e.g. reciprocating, centrifugal and rotary air compressors).

·         The student will obtain knowledge of the construction of the various mechanical components including basic parts of the components and functions of specific parts.
