· The student will have knowledge of criteria and methods for selecting the best type of foundation. Information is presented to identify the feasible foundation alternatives for more detailed study. The course presents general criteria for future design, specifically, the type and function of the structure, the nature of the applied loads, and the type of foundation material.
· The student will have knowledge of geotechnical considerations, including subsurface investigations and geology, laboratory and field testing, groundwater studies, and selection of shear strength parameters.
· The student will have knowledge of the analysis of a structure-pile system, the analysis of a soil-pile system, and the interaction of the two systems, which is highly nonlinear. Additionally, the student will have knowledge of the criteria, procedures, and parameters necessary for the analysis and design of pile foundations.
· The student will have knowledge of special considerations, such as soil-structure interaction, deep seated lateral movement and settlement, differential loadings on sheet-pile cutoffs, and effects of changes in the pile stiffness.
