| Course Description |
| EPA’s Technology Innovation and Field Services Division has developed a set of twenty-two guides summarizing cleanup methods used at Superfund and other sites. This course describes these methods, and, for each method, answers six questions in a concise and accurate manner: 1) What is it? 2) How does it work? 3) How long will it take? 4) Is it safe? 5) How might it affect the public? and 6) Why use it?

| Learning Objectives |
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Students learn implementation procedures for mechanical EPA-mandated methods for soil cleaning, including capping, excavation, fracturing, solidification/stabilization, evapotranspiration covers, and vertical engineered barriers.
- Students learn how to implement chemical EPA-mandated methods for soil cleaning, including air stripping, permeable reactive barriers, soil vapor extraction, air sparging, activated carbon treatment, in situ chemical oxidation, and in situ chemical reduction.
- Students learn how to apply thermal methods for soil cleaning, including in situ thermal treatment, thermal desorption, and incineration.
- Students learn implementation procedures for methods not fitting into the above three categories, including bioremediation, monitored natural attenuation, pump and treat, vapor intrusion mitigation, greener cleanups, ecological revitalization, and phytoremediation.
- Students learn the safety, expected duration, and applicability of each method.
