Introduction to Matter, Energy and Electricity (4 credit hours)
This course provides an introduction to matter, electricity and energy characteristics as well as many other basic terms and concepts related to the electromagnetic force. The course presents the relationships between matter and energy and provides a learning experience about protons, electrons, valence, energy levels, and the physics of electricity.
Naval Education & Training

·         The student will have knowledge of the meanings of and the relationship between matter, element, compound, molecule, mixture, atom, electron, proton, neutron, energy, valence, valence shell, and ion.

·         The student will have knowledge of the meanings of and the relationship between kinetic energy, potential energy, photons, electron orbits, energy levels, and shells and subshells.

·         The student will have knowledge of the differences between a conductor, an insulator, and a semiconductor.

·         The student will have knowledge of electrical resistance and factors that affect resistance, including type of material, effect of cross-sectional area, effect of conductor length, and effect of temperature.

·         The student will have knowledge of resistors, including composition of resistors, fixed and variable resistors, wattage rating, and the resistor color code.
