Introduction to Designing Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems (4 credit hours/4 HSW Hours)
This 4-hour course introduces the fundamentals of designing grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. Topics include a comparison of types of PV systems, theory of operation of PV cells, survey of PV technologies, conducting a site evaluation, estimating system performance, shading analysis, structural design and analysis of rooftop-mounted systems, electrical design and analysis of straight grid-connected systems with no battery backup, including string inverter systems and microinverter sytems. The course emphasizes compliance with the structural requirements of ASCE-7 and the electrical requirements of the National Electrical Code.
Roger Messenger

·         How to conduct a site evaluation, including shading analysis

·         How to select an appropriate PV system for a specific location

·         How to design the structural component of roof-mounted PV systems

·         How to design straight grid-connected PV systems that are compliant with the National Electrical Code and ASCE-7, using string inverters and microinverters.

·         How to analyze the performance of the system.
