DOE Wind Energy for Municipal Water Services (2 credit hours/2 HSW Hours)
This 2 hour course presents a systematic assessment of the potential for wind power to support water utility operation, with the objective of identifying promising technical applications. The first part of the course describes the current situation that municipal providers face with respect to energy and water. The second part describes the progress that wind technologies have made in recent years to become a cost-effective electricity source. The third part describes the analysis employed to assess potential for wind power in support of water service providers, as well as two case studies. The course concludes with results and recommendations.

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills: 
  • Students will learn about the energy requirements of municipal water service providers.
  • Students will learn how the wind energy market functions, including market drivers and market economics.
  • Students will understand implementation issues for wind power.
  • Students will become knowledgeable about wind-powered water service applications.
  • Students will learn how to screen for water service opportunities in windy U.S. areas.
  • Students will learn about the best locations with wind-water potential. Students will become familiar with several case studies of use of wind energy.
