Energy Consumption Characteristics of Commercial HVAC Building Systems (8 credit hours/8 HSW Hours)

This course focuses on energy consumption in commercial building HVAC systems in the United States.  Included in the course is a study and comparison of various heating systems, cooling systems, HVAC equipment and equipment components used  in commercial buildings and their contribution to overall energy consumption.  The course study and comparison also includes the energy use in various regions for various types of commercial buildings in the United States.  The concentration of the energy consumption study is on chillers, refrigerant compressors and heating systems.  The energy contribution of fans, pumps and other parasitic energy loads is not included unless noted.

The student will obtain knowledge of the energy used by primary cooling and heating equipment in the U.S. commercial building sector. The course includes a description of cooling systems including Central Systems, Packaged Systems and Individual Room Air Conditioning. It also includes a description of heating systems including Boilers, Furnaces, Packaged Heat Pumps as well as other heating systems.
 

The student will obtain knowledge of the factors which contribute to energy use in the various cooling and heating systems and equipment components.
 
 
The student will obtain knowledge of the segmentation of HVAC products by commercial building type, geographical area and the impact these variables have on the overall energy use.
 
 
The student will obtain knowledge of market trends and identifying areas of HVAC equipment which offer opportunities for reducing energy use.
