Belt Filter Presses - Part 5 - How Belts Affect Sludge Cake Pressure (1 credit hours)
Part 5 of this series describes the interactions between the filter belts and the process stream (sludge cake) during the filtering process.   The causes and effects of sludge cake pressure due to the action of the filter belts are examined in detail.  The difference between cake pressure, belt tension and bearing loading are analyzed.  The simple mathematical relationship between belt tension and sludge cake pressure is explained.  Basic belt filter press operating issues are discussed.
James Thompson
Students will learn about
·        Contact pressure between a wheel and a belt under tension
·        Some characteristic behaviors of sludge cake in a belt filter press
·        Classical and empirical theories of pressure under a tensioned belt
·        How mistaken theory leads to errors in design
·        How to differentiate between pressure and actual bearing loads
·        The difference between theoretical, average and peak pressure
·        Why belt tension and sludge cake pressure are important
·        How belt wrap affects bearing load without affecting pressure
·        Operating issues pertaining to belt tension, speed and feed rate.
