Introduction to AC Power Systems (2 credit hours)
This 2 hour course will provide an introduction to alternating current (AC) power systems. Power generation, transmission and distribution systems will be discussed. The components that comprise the electric grid will be introduced. The course will show you how electricity is created and transmitted all the way to the outlets in your home. The course will also discuss power system control and why electricity is a very unique source of energy.

  • Learn how the electric utility business began.
  • Learn about power systems components and how they are integrated into a system.
  • Learn about real and reactive power and why the latter is important for motors to work.
  • Learn why power is transmitted as three phase and how it is controlled.
  • Learn how electricity enters your home and is distributed.
