HVAC Basics (3 credit hours)
This course will provide the student with basic concepts in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC). An overview of the components of HVAC, basic information on Heat Load, Heat Transfer, Psychrometrics and the Refrigeration Cycle will be reviewed. Additionally, the course will explore HVAC Basic Equipment, System Types, Control Devices and Air Distribution Systems.

The student will have knowledge of the basic definition and components of HVAC.

 

The student will have knowledge of how to determine load calculations, the principles of heat transfer and the solar gain heat coefficient.

 

The student will have knowledge of the basic areas of Psychrometrics and the Psychrometric Chart.

           

The student will have knowledge of the basic refrigeration cycle.

 

The student will have knowledge of the basic equipment needed for an HVAC system.

 

The student will have knowledge of HVAC system types including:  packaged rooftop, split system and heat pump.

 

The student will have knowledge of control devices that can be used within an HVAC system.

 

The student will have knowledge of major equipment used in HVAC including chillers, cooling towers, and boilers.

 

Lastly, the student will have knowledge of duct work and dampers used in air distribution systems.
