Bridge Inspector's Manual (FHWA) Part II: Inspection Reporting System (4 credit hours/4 HSW Hours)
The Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Bridge Inspector’s Reference Manual (BIRM) is a comprehensive manual on programs, procedures, and techniques for inspecting and evaluating a variety of in-service highway bridges. BIRM serves as the basis of a comprehensive National Highway Institute training program in bridge-safety inspection. This 4 hour course is based on BIRM’s Section 4, Bridge Inspection Reporting System. Topics covered are Structure Inventory, Condition and Appraisal, Record Keeping and Documentation, The Inspection Report, and AASHTO Commonly Recognized (CoRe) Elements

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:  
Students learn the use of a structure inventory in selecting bridges for inspection. 
 
Students learn the importance of appraising and defining the condition of a bridge as a result of an inspection.
 
Students acquire record keeping and documentation skills for use in inspections.
 
Students know what makes a good quality, professional inspection report. 
 
Students can recognize AASHTO Commonly Recognized (CoRe) Elements.
