Citicorp Center in NYC: A Case Study in Professional Ethics (2 credit hours/2 HSW Hours)
This 2-hour webinar for construction professionals, architects, and engineers discusses the ethical and professional dimensions surrounding the fascinating building 601 Lexington Avenue, New York City (formerly Citicorp or Citigroup Center) completed in 1977, designed by Hugh Stubbins and William LeMessurier. This course examines this exemplary case involving the skyscrabper built above a church on “stilts” while using miscalculated measurements. We will interpret the details of what happened, examine ethical issues it raises (such as duties to the public and profession), and discuss what we can learn from this case.
Robert Clewis
  • Understand the basics of the case: what happened, the risks, and why.
  • Discuss what ethical issues are raised: public safety, professional responsibility, duty to inform the public, duty to one’s professional colleagues.
  • Constructively evaluate the actions of the main actors.
  • Interpret whether this is a ‘success’ story, and if so, why.
