Ethics and the Engineer: Food for Thought (2 credit hours/2 HSW Hours)
Thurs, Jan 10, 2019 10:00 am - 12:00 pm $125.00 Add to Cart
This 2 hour webinar is designed to promote discussion among participants of a number of engineering ethical dilemmas.  It begins with a look at the ASCE Code of Ethics and compares the ethical challenges set forth in the ASCE Code with real-life experiences that complicate the ability of the engineer to follow the Code.  Since sustainability is an important component of the ASCE Code, this course takes a careful look at how sustainability relates to environmental ethics and ecofeminism.  The ethical implications of the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the Miami bridge collapse are included as specific engineering ethical dilemma examples.
Roger Messenger
Upon completion of the course, the student should understand:

  • How a Code of Ethics is developed.
  • Utilitarianism, Cost-benefit Analysis, Duty and Rights Ethics and Virtue Ethics.
  • The similarities of Codes of Ethics and Conduct of different cultures.
  • Some of the conflicting situations that lead to violation of Ethics Codes.
  • The ethical argument for treating planet Earth as a living being.
