MSE Retaining Walls and Geosynthetics (2 credit hours/2 HSW Hours)
Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls are typically the most economical wall system chosen on many construction sites throughout the United States; however, most people, including engineers, architects, and contractors utilizing these types of systems do not understand how they are designed or the components that are necessary for these structures to remain stable.

This 2 hour webinar will take a thorough look into the design of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls through the use of geosynthetics.  The properties and importance of the geosynthetics will be presented in depth, as this component of the MSE wall system is critical to a safe structure.  A complete list of design considerations will be provided in order to ensure all methods of structure failure are considered by the designer.  The webinar will conclude with multiple case histories of failed MSE retaining walls, many of which caused failure to other structures including parking lots, roadways, and even buildings.
Bill Simpson, PE
  • Attendees will learn the key properties of geosynthetic reinforcement in an MSE wall in order to prepare a design that will serve the safety of the public for the intended life span of the structure.
  • Attendees will learn all of the potential failure modes associated with MSE walls so that all aspects of safety are considered during the design process.

  • Attendees will learn the components of an MSE wall in order to understand how the wall effects other structures and site features in the vicinity of the wall so that the entire site may remain safe for public use.

  • Attendees will learn design code requirements and how they apply to MSE design in order to provide an acceptable factor of safety for the wall.

  • Attendees will learn how buildings and water can adversely effect the factors of safety related to the retaining wall and potentially create an unsafe condition or failure if not properly accounted for in the design.
