Avoidable Construction Disasters (CILB# 0613783) - satisfies 1 hr general (1 credit hours)
Potential disasters abound at so many points along the path to completion of just about any construction project. If the unpredictable nature of nature doesnít throw a wrench into the work then there is equipment and materials that arenít always reliable or foolproof. When all else has been accounted for and compensated for, there will still remain the human elements of inexperience, haste and our ill-considered exuberance for finding short-cuts and work-arounds.

This course explores some of the many obstacles that have tripped up others, so they can be avoided in our own pursuits of excellence.
Paul Spite

  • Understand some of the elemental mistakes that can be made in a construction project, related to inadequate site investigation before proceeding.
  • Readily identify how different unexpected loading conditions can contribute to the structural failure of completed buildings.
  • Be able to explain how the inclusion of various, and often new, methods and materials in projects can result in the creation of dangerous conditions.
  • Realize the danger to individual workers of decisions made on job sites, often in the interest of saving time.
