Accessibility for the Blind (2 credit hours/2 HSW Hours)

The ADA requires that state and local governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations, communicate effectively with those who are disabled.

Approximately 18.4% of all U.S. adults are blind or have "some" or "a lot" of difficulty seeing, even when wearing corrective lenses. So, we have developed ways to better assist those with vision-related disabilities.

Most forms of accommodation are simple in nature, including the implementation and use of technology and / or the implementation of better policies and procedures. They just require willingness on the part of staff, employers and public servants, to set them in place.

In this 2 hour course, we will explore our mandate to do so.

Paul Spite, RA
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
  • Determine various strategies by which Title III entities can meet the needs of those who are visually challenged.
  • Discuss when, and under what circumstances, accommodation should be made for those with low or no vision.
  • Describe types of assistance that can be rendered by others who are sighted.
  • Examine various technological aids available for use by those who suffer from low vision.
  • Recognize the need to allow access to necessary service animals.
  • Discuss what is referred to as "accommodation within reason?"
  • Explain the primary components of accessible design in public venues.
  • Recommend architectural barriers easily addressed when providing lodging services to those with impaired vision.
