Utilizing Remote Working in the Construction Industry (CILB# 0614876) - satisfies 1 hour general (1 credit hours)
The construction industry, for the most part, has always been a hands-on endeavor. Unlike other sectors such as banking, finance and education, contractors can't take many measurements, make meaningful field observations, perform detailed inspections or build buildings over a telephone line or internet connection.

But there are plenty of ways construction companies can do almost everything else remotely.  In fact, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many construction businesses discovered that they could work successfully outside centralized office environments.

According to a 2021 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Business Response Survey of private businesses, construction industry companies increased their use of telework by over 15%, an impressive statistic given that the industry has a reputation - often exaggerated - as a slow adopter of technology.

This course will show how construction companies can successfully incorporate remote work into their day to day operations.
Kim Slowey
1. To educate students on the ability, as well as positive and negative impacts, of construction companies having employees work from home or from other remote locations.

2.  To inform construction professionals about what issues they must consider when sending employees home to work, including what equipment and training employees will need and the responsibilities both parties must assume when it comes to securing sensitive information and safeguarding equipment.

3. To educate construction professionals on what types of positions can successfully be shifted to remote work.

4. To inform construction companies about what their obligations to remote workers are under federal and state laws, including overtime compensation, workers' compensation insurance and what their responsibility is to withhold state taxes depending on where their employees live and work.
