Making it Bullet Resistant (2 credit hours/2 HSW Hours)

This course explores how architecture can provide security through ballistic (bullet) resistance, moving beyond aesthetics to create spaces that protect occupants from threatening projectiles. It introduces the core concept of ballistic resistance as the prevention of penetration while also minimizing fragmentation and harmful collateral effects. The course emphasizes that effective protection depends on a scientific understanding of energy absorption and transfer. This involves the conversion of a projectile’s kinetic energy into deformation, heat, fracture, and acoustic energy. If this conversion is incomplete, residual motion of the projectile can still cause damage. Building on that foundation, the course explains how different threats (handgun, rifle, shotgun, and related fragmentation concerns) require different levels of performance and how those needs are defined using established ballistic standards and testing methodologies.

Paul Spite

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

Classify various ballistic threats and describe their characteristics

Analyze the ballistic performance of different material types, such as ceramics, metals, and composites, and explain the energy absorption mechanisms employed by each

Interpret ballistic testing standards and certifications, critique existing specifications for ballistic-resistant products, and formulate comprehensive project specifications for ballistic protection

Design integrated ballistic protection systems for architectural applications, evaluating trade-offs between protection levels, aesthetics, and cost
