2010 ADA - A Primer for State and Local Governments (1 credit hours/1 HSW Hours)
This 1 hour course provides general guidance to assist State and local governments in understanding and complying with current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The Department of Justice revised its regulations implementing the ADA in September 2010. The new rules clarify issues that arose over the previous 20 years and contain new requirements, including the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (2010 Standards).

·         Students will realize that the ADA prohibits public entities from isolating, separating, or denying people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in the programs that are offered to others.

·         Students will understand that public entities have an ongoing obligation to ensure that individuals with disabilities are not excluded from public programs and services because public facilities are inaccessible.

·         Students will know what would be a “reasonable modification” for a public entity that would allow persons with disabilities to employ mobility devices such as walkers, manual or power wheelchairs, or electric scooters.

·         Students will understand that public entities must communicate effectively through the use of readers, notetakers, sign-language interpreters, open and closed captioning, and other tools for people who have communication difficulties.

·         Students will know the rules governing the use of service animals by a disabled person in a public facility.
