Belt Filter Presses (6 credit hours)
This 6 hour course is an introduction and overview of belt filter presses which are used in commercial and municipal applications.  Course describes belt filter presses and their main characteristics and features and how they differ from other types of liquid-solid separation devices.  Course itemizes and describes the main types of belt filter presses and their main components and accessory systems, such as the working zones of the press, the types of rollers used, drives, belt cleaning, belt guidance.  Safety issues, guarding and process controls and alarms are discussed.

  • What a belt filter press is and how it differs from similar machines. What a belt filter press does, the main types of belt filter presses. Describes main components, accessory systems and safety issues of belt filter presses.

 

  • Students will learn about how a Belt filter press is used to dewater various mixtures and the main points of the waste water treatment process. The main differences between municipal and commercial sludge and requirements for proper application of coagulants. Advantages and disadvantages of belt filter presses.
 
  • Students will learn about Belt filter press frame design and materials and the main types of belt filter press rollers and their construction.  They will also understand requirements for roller support bearings, generation of belt tension and dewatering pressure, load distribution through the belt filter press, and reasons for various design choices.
 
  • Students will learn about force and pressure calculations using a spreadsheet.
 
  • Students will learn about how belts affect sludge cake pressure and why belt tension and sludge cake pressure are important.
 
  • Students will learn about operational and maintenance issues, including preventative maintenance.
 
  • Students will learn about gravity belt thickeners.
